The Psychological Interventions in General Chemistry studies seek to understand the impact of social-psychological factors in the General Chemistry sequence.

At present, we are involved in two studies:

  • The Growth Mindset study in General Chemistry explores how promotion of a growth mindset—the view that ability and intelligence are fluid and built through practice, rather than being predetermined and fixed—impacts students’ course performance and study techniques.
  • The Social Belonging study in General Chemistry investigates how social-psychological factors like students’ sense of belonging, both in the classroom and in the broader scientific community, influence their course performance and retention in STEM fields.
