PHYSICS DBER

Dr. Hammer is a Professor of Education and Physics & Astronomy at Tufts University. He is currently serving as Chair of the Department of Education, in addition to his role as Director of the STEM Education program.

Dr. Hammer’s research focuses on learning and teaching in STEM fields (mostly physics) across ages, from young children through adults. Much of his focus has been on intuitive “epistemologies,” how instructors interpret and respond to student thinking, and resource-based models of knowledge and reasoning. His current projects include Students Doing Science, which examines the dynamics of learners’ engagement and persistence, and Novel Engineering, which explores ideas and strategies for integrating engineering and literacy.
