Open Position: Project Manager, WUSTL HHMI Inclusive Excellence Project, CIRCLE

The HHMI Inclusive Excellence project for Washington University in St. Louis is a collaboration between the Center for Integrative Research on Teaching, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE); The Teaching Center; Cornerstone; College of Arts & Sciences; and the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering. This program, supported by a 5-year grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, encompasses a broad approach to educate 3 key groups (STEM faculty, 4-year advisors and student-affairs professionals, and peer leaders) who work with students in the lower-level STEM courses about barriers to inclusion and academic success in STEM and lack of metacognitive abilities of students. The second part of this approach is to support these key groups in implementing and evaluating social-psychological and metacognitive strategies to ensure that classes, advisor meetings, and peer-support programs become more inclusive.

The HHMI Project Manager (PM) will manage the everyday operations of a project on making STEM education more inclusive at Washington University. The PM will interact daily closely with the HHMI Program co-PIs, HHMI Education Specialist, STEM faculty, and PhD staff at The Teaching Center and CIRCLE who are collaborating on this HHMI grant. The PM’s main focus will be to collaborate with the STEM faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate the innovations in the classrooms to improve the inclusiveness of our classes, advisor meetings, and course-related peer-support programs. In addition, the PM will be responsible for designing and implementing the evaluation studies, as well as collecting the data for these evaluation studies of the professional-development and curricular-intervention components.

Required Qualifications
• PhD degree in a science field (especially biology, chemistry, psychology, physics, and mathematics), with empirical research experience in education or discipline-based education research
• A record of accomplishment in independent research, with demonstrable knowledge of sound experimental design and evaluative research methods, as well as a strong command of statistical analysis and statistical software, such as R, SAS or SPSS.
• Excellent project-management and organizational skills, including attention to detail and sensitivity to data quality.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and effectively.
• Excellent critical-thinking and analytical skills.
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the HHMI Project Leadership team, CIRCLE’s directors and staff, and with faculty and staff from other academic departments and centers.

Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of psychosocial and metacognitive approaches in STEM disciplines at the higher-education level, and of methods for evaluating the effectiveness of these methods
• Experience designing evaluative studies in higher education.
• Knowledge of standard protocols for conducting human-subject research, including IRB-approved protocols for protecting the confidentiality and privacy of participants in behavioral/educational research.
• Knowledge and training in pedagogy, course design, and evidenced-based pedagogies.
• At least 2 years of teaching experience at the higher-education level.
